Ten Little Dinosaurs – Review & Craft Activity

For anyone that follows the blog, you know that I love books. This love is something that both my children seem to have inherited and I couldn’t be more pleased about that. This year we will be sharing some of our favourite childrens books with you. The ones that have been tried, tested and read over and over (and over!) again, and are the ones we really adore. Then, in an effort to help you bring those stories alive, we will also be sharing a toddler / pre-school friendly craft to make alongside the book.

This month it’s the turn of Ten Little Dinosaurs.

TEN LITTLE DINOSAURS – WHAT WE THOUGHT

Written by Mike Brownlow and illustrated by Simon Rickerty, we bought Ten Little Dinosaurs for Henry at Christmas. It’s very quickly become a HUGE hit with both kids.

The story is simple with ten little dinosaurs hatching while their mother is asleep. They therefore decide to go on an adventure. Unfortuntely though on their travels they seem to be picked off one by one, counting down from 10 all the way to 1. Don’t worry though, it has a happy ended as mama comes to the rescue.

Darcie especially loves reading along with this book, in particular “ten little dinosaurs all say roarrrrrr!” Add in the fact she can count along with me as we read and this is an instant hit with her, even though she loves to correct that the pterosaur in the book should apparantly be a teridactaur. What can I say? The girl is apparantly particular abour her dinosaurs!

Henry on the other hand loves the colours and the illustrations, pointing each dinosaur out with glee as we turn the page. Filled with bright colours and lots of action on each page, the story is a lot of fun and rhymes beautifully (we do love a rhyming book). The text on the page compliments the pictures making it fun to read with them.

With counting, beautiful rhymes and even poo – Ten Little Dinosaurs is a huge hit with both my two and I think we will be investing in some of the other ones in the “ten little” series.

TEN LITTLE DINOSUARS – WHAT WE MADE

Well, it had to be a dinosaur really and with my kids in mind, it had to be messy. Therefore, we went with handprint dinosaurs.

WHAT YOU NEED

• Card
• Dinosaur shape cut from coloured paper
• Paint
• Paintbrushes
• Glue

WHAT WE DID

First of all you just need to take the dinosaur shape and glue onto the card making sure you leave enough space at the top for handprints. Then, after painting paint onto palms, print onto the dinosaurs backs to make spikes.

Leave to dry and you are left with your very own handprint dinosaur!  Add in an eye with a felt tip pen, and we even named each of ours; one for Darcie and one for Daddy.
