Close to Home by Cara Hunter
THE BLURB
HOW CAN A CHILD GO MISSING WITHOUT A TRACE?
Last night, eight-year-old Daisy Mason disappeared from a family party. No one in the quiet suburban street saw anything – or at least that’s what they’re saying.
DI Adam Fawley is trying to keep an open mind. But he knows the nine times out of ten, it’s someone the victim knew.
That means someone is lying…
And that Daisy’s time is running out.
CLOSE TO HOME – MY THOUGHTS
Close to Home was the June choice for my Bookish Mama’s online book club and I must say that I am so pleased that it was. I love love LOVED this book. I’m a sucker for an investigative thriller anyway but Close to Home takes it that one step further in the intrigue. Written in a style that is so fluid, that you can’t help but keep turning page after page.
With no formal chapters, Close to Home instead naturally falls into short quick sections as the narrative flips between the investigating officers, social media posts on Facebook and Twitter, press releases and flashbacks into the past. When this makes for is a realistic timeline which follows the investigation after Daisy Mason – an 8-year-old girl – goes missing seemingly without a trace at a family party. Although they try their best to look like the perfect family, the Masons are all hiding secrets from each other and from eyes looking in on them.
I loved the addition of social media in the story as it gives it a realistic touch. Unfortunately, the entire world seems to be tried by social media and the Twitter trolls within Close to Home has a sad ring of real life to it.
Anyone who loves a good crime novel will enjoy Close to Home and I loved that it kept be guessing the entire way through. I must have changed my mind 10 times throughout the story as to what happened, as each theory I came up with just didn’t sit right with me. Much like the behaviour of the entire Mason family. A definite page turner full of suspense that will keep you guessing right until the very last pages. And at 99p it’s an absolute bargain!
Close to Home is currently available on Amazon for 99p for the Kindle edition
