The Benefits of Riding a Scooter
Summer always brings with it the countdown to the Bears birthday and the big question of what we should get her. She has been looking at some of the bigger kids on scooters as they wheel along on the school run. I have to admit, I’m hesitant but I also found a rather fabulous rainbow scooter that I know she would love. So, I decided to take a closer look into some of the benefits of owning a scooter. Here’s what I found out.
IT’S SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE
I love that any age and size can have a go on a scooter. The Bear is a little on the small size for her age so she sometimes struggles with some of the things that she wants to do. Things like riding a bike and pushing the peddles are a little more difficult when you’re not quite big enough yet. Therefore, I love that this would give her the ability to not be held back by her size.
IT’S GREAT EXERCISE
I hate to bring it up as a point, but the fact of the matter is that kids are getting bigger, often they’re spending more time indoors and they are getting less exercise than ever before. A scooter and anything else to get kids active – preferably outside – is never going to be a bad thing. Make it fun and it will never feel like something they need to do for their health.
IT BUILDS STRENGTH
One step further than the overall exercise benefits of riding a scooter, it seems that it can do so much more. In addition to the cardiovascular merits, there are also muscular benefits as the action of riding a scooter effectively stretches and strengthens most of the lower muscle groups. The torso – tummy and back – as well as the bum, thighs and calves. An all over body workout that’s great for them.
IT GETS THEM OUTSIDE
Getting outside is not only great for kids physical health from a fitness perspective but exposure to sunlight also gives them some much needed vitamin D. Add in the mental health benefits and there is nothing bad about spending more time outside. I think that the sooner kids get into that habit and being outdoors becomes part of their daily life, the more likely it is to become a life-long habit.
So, there we have it. I have to admit there are so many more benefits that what I realised. So, a scooter – along with a helmet of course – is firmly on the ‘definite maybe’ list of birthday gifts for the Bear this year.
