Yes, you read that right. Triple glazed windows!

I’ll be honest and say that I didn’t even know it existed until I started looking at window options. The question is though, is it worth the extra cost?

WHAT IS TRIPLE GLAZING?

Well, it’s exactly what it implies. Instead of the two panes of glass in double glazing; triple glazing has a third. It is widely known that double glazing offers a huge improvement on single glazing, so the question is what does that extra pane offer?

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

There are three big benefits to triple glazing:

Reduction in noise: if you live in a urban area with a high noise level then the likelihood is that you have also ‘enjoyed’ that noise entering your home. Double glazing dramatically helps with that, but triple glazing takes it that one step further.

Reduces condensation: we’ve all seen condensation within double glazed windows. This is caused when warm air inside the home comes into contact with cold windows. This is when the water condenses. In some double glazing when one of the layers leaks, this condensation occurs between the panes. This third layer in triple glazing reduces the chance of that happening.

Reduces cold patches: double glazing can create cold patches in the home due to the variation of u value across the room (windows compared to walls and doors). Triple glazing is a solution to this issue and works to ensure that rooms are heated consistently throughout.

WHAT IS THE DRAWBACK?

That all sounds great doesn’t it? However, the question is what is the drawback? And the big one is cost. There is no doubt that triple glazing costs more than double glazing. Therefore, when considering whether this is a window solution that you would like to invest in, you need to factor this into your decision.

However, if your house is currently well heated but you still experience cold spots. Or, if you live in a an area that has a lot of noise outside. Then it could be that despite the additional cost, that triple glazing is a good option for you.

Still not convinced? That’s fine. There are many things you need to consider when choosing a window solution to suit your home. Such as, how old are your current windows? What is your current insulation like? How sturdy are you walls? And of course, what matters most to you? Once you are clear on all of these points, then you need to shop around and compare the prices and styles available to you to find something that meets both your needs and your budget. Especially as there are so many options out there such as bay windows, double glazing, sash windows and French windows to name but a few.
