A new kind of storytime with Moonlite | AD
With World Book Day around the corner, what better timing to share a new way to enjoy books? We were recently offered the chance to review Moonlite – a storytelling experience with a difference – and as we have two little bookworms who love to read, I was keen to get involved.
I am very lucky that both my Bears have inherited my love of books and we make sure we read to them every day. I am always looking for new ways to bring books to life for them which I why I was so intrigued by the concept of Moonlite.
WHAT IS MOONLITE?
Moonlite is a device which attaches to your mobile phone and provides you with a storybook projector which works from your in-built torch. While the images are being projected, the story is displayed on the screen of your phone and has sound effects embedded into the tales to enhance the experience.
One thing I will say is that the device didn’t quite fit my phone. I have a Huawei P20 and it wasn’t quite long enough to reach the torch to cast the images. It didn’t matter though, as it was more than easy enough to attach the Moonlight from the side. The only impact being I had to read the stories from an angle. An issue if it were War and Peace, less so with Goose and The Princess and the Pea.
WHAT WE THOUGHT
I love how immersed in the experience my two were. Both were amazed by the stories coming to life on the wall and loved getting up close and touching them. The images are clear and bright with vibrant colours. Beautifully illustrated and I was really surprised by how bright they were.
We’ve had a great time trying it out on all the different coloured walls in our house!
I like that Moonlite automatically operates in a night mode. This means that by day it’s bright and vibrant but a night it’s more muted to make for a more relaxing bedtime.
The app itself is really easy to install from the marketplace and once done, adding the titles you have purchased is as easy as typing the unique authorisation code which comes in the pack. You will then have your very own library to choose what to read next from.
Overall this is a great way to bring storytelling to life. It will never replace books for us, but we really enjoyed exploring some of our favourite stories in a new way. The kids loved engaging with the images and asking for books on mummy’s phone has become a common occurrence.
THE MOONLITE RANGE
We were sent the Moonlite Starter Pack which included Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Busy Spider alongside three Moonlite Story Reels: Goose, The Princess & The Pea and The Three Little Pigs. The clear favourites for us were Goose for her and the Very Busy Spider for him. However, that doesn’t stop us apparently needing to read / listen / watch the whole of our collection at least 4 times a day.
Also in the range is a gift pack available featuring Mr Men and Fairy Tales as well as additional reels you can purchase. The titles of these include not only the three we were sent, but also The Little Prince, Mr Strong, Little Miss Princess, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Beatrix Potter The Tale of Jemima Puddleduck & The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Spot the Dog and Dinosaur Roar.
If you’re looking to start your own collection then Moonlite is available to buy at The Entertainer, Smyths Toy Stores, Amazon and JoJo Maman Bebe. I already have my eye on Dinosaur Roar for Buddy and Little Miss Princess for the Bear!
