What I read in March
How is it already April?? I managed to get through three books since during March since my last post (if you missed it then you can check out what I read back in February here). Although I may not have the reading pace that I enjoyed last year but I am enjoying this slow and steady approach to books much more.
So, without further ado, here is what I managed to read last month:
My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing
Oh my goodness – what a book! This was an eARC provided to me through NetGalley. Dark and twisted, it follows an ordinary married couple. Or so you think. He’s a tennis coach, she works in real estate. What they both share is a twisted secret. One that starts to spiral out of control and threatens everything they hold dear, including the wellbeing of their children.
I’m really trying not to give away any spoilers but it’s so hard with the biggest shock being delivered in the opening chapters. C.J. Tudor described it as “Dexter meets Gone Girl” and I couldn’t agree more. Especially as the book starts to draw to a close and the twists start coming thick and fast! The only drawback of this one was the middle which starts to lose pace, but it opens strong and ends even stronger.
If you think thrillers are getting predictable then this is the book for you!! Amazon (affiliate) link below to take a closer look.
Hunting Lila by Sarah Alderson
This was one that I grabbed from a charity book sale and I think cost me £1. It a was quid well spent!!
Lila is seventeen years old and has two big secrets. 1. she’s in love with her brother’s best friend Alex, and 2. she is telekinetic. Her brother Jack and Alex work for an organisation called The Unit, which she finds out is in place to hunt down people like her. What’s more, they’re after the people who murdered her mother 5 years before. Hunting Lila follows her as her entire world fall apart, and she learns that everything she knew about her abilities and her mother were a lie.
This is really well written, and I loved Lila as a character. She’s a fun combination of feisty temper, teenage angst and courageous young woman. A light read that is well paced, I flew through Hunting Lila. Although there were a few quiet spots when it came to action, these were filled seamlessly with a little romance. Not enough to switch you off, but enough to give you a few warm fuzzies. Needless to say, that this is a series I’m DEFINITELY going to carry on with and I can’t wait to check out Alderson’s other books.
Losing Lila by Sarah Alderson
After enjoying the first book so much I headed straight into the second without much pause. Lila is on the run with Alex and Jack – her brother – is critically hurt. Intent on rescuing not only him but also her mother who has been held by the Unit all this time, Lila heads back into battle using some quickly developing psy skills.
I won’t lie – this one doesn’t quite have the grip that the first book did for me. Maybe I did too much too soon, but I just found the pace of this one a little bit too slow in the middle. However, it starts well and everything picks up again in the end. There are some fun twists to be had and although everything ends a little to neatly and nice for my usual taste, Losing Lila is a good end to a two book story. A great solid read for any young adult / supernatural readers out there.
