Crochet Baby Blanket – free pattern

I made a few versons of this crochet baby blanket as new baby gifts for friends over the past 12 months, but I had to hold off sharing the pattern until now in fear of the new mummies would see it.

We are now clear though, all blankets have been gifted and I am free to share. Hurrah!

So here goes, this is how to make your very own crochet baby blanket. This is a quick and easy pattern but it looks so effective while being wonderfully adaptable to any colour pattern. Here’s what you need to do.

Abbreviations

ch – chain
rep – repeat
st(s) – stitch(es)
tr – treble

I used 3x 200g balls of DK yarn for this pattern. 1 ball each in light grey, dark grey and teal. This made a good size for a baby blanket.

PATTERN – UK TERMINOLOGY

With a 4mm hook and DK yarn, make a 100 st ch.

Row 1 = ch 3, 1tr in 4th ch from hook (3 missed ch count as first tr), 1tr in each ch to end (100sts)

Row 2 = Join new colour at end of final st, 3ch (counts as first st of next row), turn. Miss first st, 2tr in next st. Continue with *miss 1 st, 2tr in next st* repeat to final 2 sts, miss 1st. 1tr in final st.

Row 3 = Join new colour at end of final st, 3ch (counts as first st of next row), turn. Continue with pattern of *2tr inbetween the sts from previous row* to end, 1tr in final st.

Row 4 onwards = repeat

And that’s it! Repeat until the blanket is your desired length.

I finished on the same colour I started on and then gave it a simple boarder of 1dc in every st, along all four sides of the blanket. Along the edges pick up stitches. There is no perfect number as it will depend on your tension but you need it to still lay nice and flat. For me that was picking up 3 stitches every 2 rows of chevron.

Repeat until you have 2 rounds of dc to edge the blanket.

Tie off, cut and weave in. Et voila! One crochet baby blanket.

You can also play around with colourways. I made this one in a three colour, single line pattern but you could try alternating just two colours, adding in a rainbow of colours or doubling up the rows so you get a thicker chevron pattern showing through.
