British Science Week with Learning Resources | AD
A few weeks ago we headed out to the Science Discovery Museum in Wrexham. Seeing how much the kids engaged with the exhibitions, made we realise we need to have more fun with science at home.
Science – and in fact STEM subjects in general – aren’t my forte and as a result we often overlook them in our play. Instead we tend to reach to crafts before anything else but our fun exploring all things science showed me that it’s time to step up our STEM game!
Incidentally, it’s perfect timing as this weeks marks British Science Week. Running from 6 – 15 March, It’s a 10-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths. To mark the occasion, Learning Resources sent us a few things to help us get closer to science.
SCIENCE LAB SET
This is a wonderful way to introduce children to the world of chemistry.
Containing beakers, a magnifying glass, funnel, pipette, flask, tweezers, lab style glasses, large and small test tubes with lids and stands, all the equipment looks like that which you would find in any chemistry lab. However, all the pieces are chunky and child friendly enough even for little hands making it a great to spark curiosity in the next generation of little scientists.
My favourite thing about the Science Lab Set though has to be the 10 science cards included in each pack. Wipe clean and ready to be used time and time again. the Little Man went straight for the volcano experiment.
This was a huge hit. As in HUGE! And with both of them which is always a lovely bonus. The instructions for the experiments were easy to follow and had a wide range of options available. I’ve already had a look through them all and we have put a list together of all the ones we want to try next.
YUCKOLOGY
Next up, let’s talk slime!!
Kids + slime is always a winning combination. The Yuckology Slime Lab lets children get mucky while learning the science behind it all.
Each box comes complete with beaker, slime strainer, sludge stirrer, 3x slime containers (+ lids) along with a muck mixer and recipe card.
The recipes were clear and easy to follow even for a complete newbie like me. However, be sure to check the ingredients lists before you start. Some of the recipes you will be ready to make using things from your cupboards such as cornflour, hand soap and washing up liquid. Others may need a quick trip to the shop before you get started so make sure you check first.
What I really liked about this though is that all the tools are chunky and easy enough for little hands to use. My two especially loved getting involved in all the stirring and of course the straining afterwards! They particularly love the fact that the set came complete with tubs to store their slime ready to play with time and time again.
GETTING HANDS ON WITH STEM SUBJECTS
We had such a great time exploring science using our Learning Resource sets, and my two haven’t stopped talking about it since. So much so we’ve even recently made some oobleck. Which – by the way – works amazing with the strainers from our Yuckology set!
It just goes to show that science doesn’t have to be your strong suit to be able to enjoy it with your children. If you’re like me and you really aren’t great at thinking up experiments that you can do together, then it doesn’t matter as Learning Resources has your back. With a huge range of hands-on educational toys, games and learning resources – a lot of which are STEM based – there really is something to suit every interest.
