Top Tips for Helping Your Child with Maths

One important part of a child’s study is maths and is often tied in with science subjects and key skills development. No matter your own thoughts on the subject, maths is an essential part of a child’s progression; for some it’s easier to manage than others though.
To help your child, aside from general activities and extended study periods for this subject, there are positive ways to motivate your child at home, too. In this guide from this top London sixth form we take a look at the ways you can help your child with their maths skills.
Practice maths around the home
It doesn’t have to be intense work; the little things help your child a lot with their maths skills. Get them to add up items on a bill for instance, or ask them to recite a specific set of times tables for you to practice with them. These small things will give them a little bit of practice each day as they get through their studies.
Focus on the parts they really struggle with
With so many aspects of maths subjects for your child to factor in, there are going to be areas where they struggle the most and what they find much easier to handle. GIve more focus on the areas where they need that extra support – work on more of those questions and challenges together so that they can continue to practice the tougher parts.
Praise for effort, not for winning
It’s not great to hear that you’re still not performing well no matter how hard you try – aim to avoid doing this in front of your children as well. If maths really is a struggle for them, they need support wherever they can. Praise your child for just trying, even if they still can’t answer the questions presented to them. They’ll be motivated to work harder next time.
