Tip 1: Entry Requirements
Before packing your suitcases, you should have a clear idea of what the requirements and the whole process of legally arriving and entering the country are. If you are a European citizen, things will be much easier since as such you can enter and work in all European countries. For international citizens, the process is longer and a bit more complex as you need to find a job, apply for a visa and go through an interview. However, this process guarantees that you will have a stable life from the first moment you step foot in Athens.
Tip 2: Legal Counsel
As you can tell right from the first tip, moving to a new city entails that you need to know everything about legal procedures. This applies to all kinds of issues. For example, if you have a business that you want to continue operating in Athens, you should visit an Athens law firm so that you get informed about the laws and regulations that you must follow in Greece. Legislation from one country to another differs, so do not do anything based on what you used to do in your own country.
Tip 3: Language
The official language of Greece is Greek. It goes without saying that people in Athens speak Greek. Since Athens in particular, and the whole country in general, receives many tourists all year round, there are signs in English everywhere and the vast majority of people speak English. However, you should start learning Greek before moving to Athens for good. Greek people know that their native language is difficult, and they will respect and admire you for your attempt to learn their language. Of course, they will help you out in whatever language you choose to talk to them.
Tip 4: Money
The currency in Greece is euro. If you are coming from a country that uses another currency, it is wise to learn about exchange rates. Athens is a relatively cheap city, but there are some neighborhoods that are expensive. Wages are low, and this is why basic foods and rent are affordable. Most places, like restaurants, coffee shops and supermarkets, accept card payments. It is advisable to always have cash on you because most taxis and kiosks do not accept cards.
