1000 hours outside challenge | FREE PRINTABLE
I decided early on that I didn’t want to set resolutions this year. Instead I have set a series of challenges that I want to achieve instead. My indoor challenge is to read 52 books this year (which is really an annual challenge to be fair). The big one though is that I want us to spend 1000 hours outside during 2023. Something I hope that will also become an annual challenge!
What is the 1000 hours outside challenge?
This is something I had never heard of before but recently came across the concept on Instagram and immediately knew that I wanted us to to take part. The aim is simple and is exactly what it says: to spend 1000 hours outside during the year.
Now, this sounds pretty simple but 1000 hours breaks down to 19.25 hours per week or 2.75 hours per day. Eek!
I have no doubt that won’t be a problem at all during the summer, especially during camping adventures. However, the winter months will need a little more effort. Wrapping up warm and capitalising on clear days wherever possible. Which is exactly what we’ve been trying to do.
To support the challenge, I am going to be sharing some of our favourite walks that we come across. Some maybe places to explore, whereas others will be designated walks. Recorded mainly for our memories, but if it manages to give you a few ideas too then all the better!!
How to track your hours
I’m fairly old school and love to use a paper planner. Therefore I’ve simply printed out 1000 squares highlighted in excel and stuck it in my planner. Each time we complete an hour, I colour a square in the grid. I plan to switch colours each month to keep track of when we complete those 1000 hours.
Yes, it is basic and yes, the numbers are pretty small when printed in A4. But it does exactly what I wanted it to do, which is keep us on track.
If you like the thought of tracking manually you can download my free printable for the challenge.
Some of the people I found on Instagram track using their phones and others use an app. Basically find a way that suits you and just get outside.
Have you ever done the 1000 hours outside challenge? It’s still not to late to start tracking for this year.
