Reconnecting…
Today we had our second date day in almost 2.5 years and our first since Henry joined us. It felt strange, amazing, unnerving and exciting….needless to say a mixed bag of emotions.
My parents looked after the Bears for the day – who had a great time at Nanny & Grumpy’s – while hubby and I did some errands (rock n roll right?!), had some lunch and went to the cinema. Nothing extraordinary but absolutely perfect in it’s normalcy. You see what we wanted to do was simply reconnect.
For some reason we’re feeling it more this time round. Maybe it’s because there is just so little spare time in the day now we have two, and that spare time is spend on exciting things like laundry and keeping up with the avalanche of dishes that threaten to fall. Regardless of the reason though, it feels like we are losing sight of Vicki & Alex and disappearing under the label of Mummy & Daddy. I am more than just a mum though and hubby more than a Dad, and the one thing we are most afraid of is losing ourselves in parenthood and having nothing left as a partnership outside of being parents – basically we still want something to talk about and hold us together at 50 years old when the kids have all left home!
So what we plan is a monthly date day where we put on one of the grandparents and spend the day together just the two of us – what we do is not important but the purpose is to spend it together as a couple rather than as parents, which is exactly what today was all about. It’s so easy to get lost in the routine and what we are aiming to do is keep sight of what made us fall in love with one another so we never forget that or take each other for granted.
So we had a fantastic day, but do you know what the best thing about it was? It’s such a cliche but it was going back to pick up the Bears and seeing Darcie’s excited face waiting at the window and Henry’s gorgeous smile as we walked through the door. I am after all first and foremost a mummy and oh boy did I miss them!

Wow I bet your husband is thrilled that your favourite part of the date was when it ended?!
