The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter
THE BLURB
One ran. One stayed. But who is…the good daughter?
Twenty-eight years ago, Charlotte and Samantha Quinn’s childhoods were destroyed by a terrifying attack on their family home. It left their mother dead. It left their father – a notorious defence attorney – devastated. And it left the family consumed by secrets from that shocking night.
Twenty-eight years later, Charlie has followed in her father’s footsteps to become a lawyer. But when violence comes to their home town again, the case triggers memories she’s desperately tried to suppress. Because the shocking truth about the crime which destroyed her family won’t stay buried for ever…
THE GOOD DAUGHTER – MY THOUGHTS
I loved this book. As in LOVED it.
The Good Daughter is told from the perspective of two sisters – Charlie and Sam – both lived through the most traumatic experience of their lives. An experience which leaves them both effected but in very different ways. Sam got out, as quickly as she could and now has built a very successful life for herself in New York. Charlie on the other hand stayed. And 28 years later, finds herself in the middle of another traumatic event when she witnesses a school shooting.
As a series of events bring the sisters back together, the truth starts to slowly unfold. The truth not only about the shooting which doesn’t seem as straight forward as it initially seemed, but also the truth about that night 28 years ago.
I love the change in voice throughout the book as each sister brings their own perspective. Charlie is full of emotion and rarely still. She literally runs from sitation to the next. Sam’s perspective in contrast is more considered and more meatured. Seeking out facts and full of control. What really delivers an impact in The Good Daughter though is the unfolding of the truth about that night all those years ago. It seems both sisters hid something about what happened that night.
Gripping, emotional and intense. The Good Daughter keeps you turning page after page. By far my favourite Karin Slaughter book that I’ve read to date.
The Good Daughter is currently available on Amazon for 3.99 for the Kindle edition (affiliate link).
