Autism With Lola – Playing With Bourbon Badger by Jodie Isitt (+ giveaway) | AD
We were recently offered the chance to take a closer look at a lovely children’s book which aims to help little ones understand diversity and disabilities. With two little bookworms in the house – three including me! – we were all excited to take a look within the pages of Autism With Lola – Playing With Bourbon Badger.
WRITING WHAT YOU KNOW
Jodie Isitt is a mother of three children all of which have autism and additional needs, so she understands first-hand the challenges that her children face every day. She is working hard to use storytelling to help develop other children’s understanding of what it is like to live with autism and anxiety.
AUTISM WITH LOLA – WHAT WE THOUGHT
Autism With Lola – Playing With Bourbon Badger is about embracing differences, it’s about kindness and it’s about friendship. I am sure you will agree that these are all things that we would want to instil in our children.
The Bear immediately fell in love with the illustration as Lola looks like so many of the cuddly animals which she loves so much. She listened to the story with interest and accepted Lola’s additional needs in the blink of an eye. For me this shows the importance of normalisation. Kids accept what they see without judgement or comment. That’s why the more children with additional needs are portrayed in books and on television, the better.
In short, this is a sweet story filled with cute animals and written in an accessible style that allows children to understand diversity and disabilities.
