The Real Play Revolution – review and giveaway (AD)
The title of this book says is all. The Real Play Revolution: Why We Need to Be Silly with Our Kids – and How to Do It. Ash Perrin has created a book which reminds parents 0f the importance of play. In an age where technology reins, it’s refreshing to find a book which not only reminds us of how important it is to simply play, but also gives us practical suggestions as to HOW to do that.
First of all though I want to introduce you to Ash as he is an author with a difference. He is also the founder and CEO of The Flying Seagull Project: a UK-based charity that aims to bring happiness to children across the globe. With The Real Play Revoluntion, what Perrin has attempted to do, is give us the means to bring a little of that happiness into out homes too.
THE REAL PLAY REVOLUTION REVIEW
Let me just say I loved this book. Not only does it look great, but it’s jam packed full of practical advice as to how to be silly with kids. I’ve already got a serious amount of ideas from it for games over the summer holidays. Real Play tells us we need only 4 things to get started:
- a sense of humour
- low-to-no sense of shame
- imagination
- lots of enthusiasm and energy
So, I know that’s actually easier said than done. As adults, we lose that basic confidence of playing freely and with abandon. We feel self-conscious when being silly and as a result it no longer becomes second nature as we grow up. That’s where The Real Play Revolution really excels. It reminds us just why it’s so important with information and data which supports Perrin’s approach to play then gives us suggestions as to how to put play into practice.
Some of the activities we already know and will have probably already played. Things like speed drawing, stuck in the mud and red rover. Others will have been adapted and changed to suit the game whereas others will be brand new, developed for The Real Play Revolution. One touch I really liked though is that there is no age guidance on the games within the book. All the suggested activities are designed to be ideas only. They are not a set of instructions for us to force on our children, instead they are for us to adapt to suit our families.
Not only is The Real Play Revolution a great book for parents looking for inspiration but also for professionals too. Teachers, carers and youth workers I think would all be able to draw inspiration from this book.
