5 Important Life Skills You Should Explore with Your Child
This is a collaborative post. Thank you for supporting the posts which make this blog possible.
One of the joys of parenting is seeing your little one grow and develop. As they grow older, they will begin to do things for themselves, learn new skills and start to become independent. While there’s no right or wrong to parenting, there are 5 skills that we think are essential for children to learn.

Problem Solving
Problem solving is a key transferable skill that can be applied to any situation. Regardless of whether they want to be an engineer or a hair stylist, your child will need to use these skills in some capacity. They can be easily built on too. You can build upon them through play – something that I can almost guarantee that they’ll be on board with. Whether that’s monopoly, Cluedo, Rubix cubes or modern video games, they all throw obstacles their way and they must use their thinking skills to come up with effective solutions.
Creative Thinking
This stems from the last point. To be an effective problem solver, your child will need to be able to think creatively and innovatively. In life, the answer won’t always be there staring them in the face. They will need to be able to think outside of the box and one way that you can train their brains to do that is by giving them opportunities for unstructured play.
Kindness
Kindness and compassion are social skills that are often overlooked. They are key to socialising and integrating into society. You can help your child to be kinder to those around them by encouraging them to think about others’ feelings and modelling it yourself.
Critical Thinking
Not every idea is the best and your child will need to be able to evaluate the cards that life hands them and make the best decisions for themselves.
Communication
Last but not least, we have communication. It’s a soft skill but one that they will need wherever they go.
