Folic Acid
It is recommended for women to take folic acid before and after getting pregnant. This should be at a dose of 400 micrograms every day before pregnant and should be continued for 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Stop Smoking
It’s a well-known fact that smoking can cause unborn babies harm. It raises the chance of birth defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate. They may also have difficulty eating after birth which could require surgery to fix. Breaking this habit can also reduce the risk of your child developing health problems after they are born.
Alcohol
This is another important lifestyle change that you will need to make during pregnancy. Cutting down on your consumption now can help for an easier transition. The risks that alcohol presents are:
- Miscarriage
- Premature birth
- Your baby having a low birthweight
Take Vaccinations
Vaccinations are effective at protecting you against viruses. Unfortunately, there is not very much that we can do other than build our immunity which vaccines can help us to do. They contain dead or inactive versions of the diseases which help to trigger natural antibodies. Those such as the flu can make us very ill and put unborn children at risk.
Counselling
Trying to get pregnant can be emotionally draining. Some find counselling helpful as it helps them to feel less anxious about the process, boosting the likelihood to conceive.
