How to Raise a Compassionate Child
This is a collaborative post. Thank you for supporting the posts which make this blog possible.
Showing kindness is a simple thing that you can do to make the world that we live in a much better place. It can help us to build meaningful connections and receive kindness in return. This makes it an important social skill to teach children. It shouldn’t be something that’s particularly difficult either as all humans are born with the desire to help others. The rest is down to nurture and how children are raised.
If you’re looking for parenting tips on how to raise a compassionate child, you are in the right place. A private school in Sevenoaks has shared some guidance with us below.

Acknowledge Others’ Feelings
To be compassionate there needs to be an understanding of emotions and a respect for them. This is something that you can teach your child by being considerate of the people around you and giving them a 101 on what emotions look like. For this, you can use children’s story books, their favourite cartoons, or real-life situations to point them out.
Show Them How to Help
It’s also important to teach your child ways that they can help and be compassionate. That might be by sharing their toys or something else that shows care and empathy. You can help your child in these situations by offering them ideas and praising them for their thoughtfulness.
Respond to Unkind Behaviour Appropriately
As your child grows, they will misbehave both intentionally and unintentionally. That might be by them being unkind to others. When in a situation like this, it’s important to use it as an opportunity to teach them about how we treat others. Don’t let bad behaviour slide by highlighting that what they did was wrong, why and reminding them to say sorry. The same goes for those around you. Accepting bad behaviour from others can indicate that that’s okay to your child and confuse them.
