Like many parents, you have probably thought about whether to encourage your child to learn an instrument. Learning to play has many benefits as it can help children to explore their talents, find a hobby and a skill that allows them to express themselves musically. To help you decide, we have some guidance from an independent school in Kingston upon Thames below.

Benefits
Academic Performance
Aside from the benefits mentioned above, the statistics say a lot. Children that take music lessons tend to perform better at school and this is for a number of reasons.
The first is their passion and motivation to go to school. If your child has something that they enjoy, they will likely feel excited about attending. As a result, they may take less time off school and be more invested in it.
The other reason is that they are able to improve on their thinking skills. Music is formatted differently to normal instructions. There are notes that need to be understood and followed. This requires some problem solving and using the part of the brain that’s responsible for memory.
Fulfilment
Children can get satisfaction from seeing themselves improve lesson by lesson as they stay consistent in their efforts. They can also express the way that they feel as musicians often do which can help them to deal with their emotions. All of this can boost their confidence and improve their emotional well-being.
The Challenges
Commitment
As you would imagine, learning to play an instrument involves commitment. Your child will need to be patient as they may not see progress for a while. This might make it difficult for them to continue and make it a more expensive process than it already is.
Stress
Eventually, if your child wants to pursue a career in music, they may experience stress as it is a demanding career choice.
