The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools
This is a collaborative post. Thank you for supporting the posts which make this blog possible.
The vast majority of schools provide pastoral care in their schools that allow staff to connect with students, offer their own support and give guidance to children. With children in the most crucial years of their lives it’s important to have care and support available for them to access. Here, in this guide from a private school in Devon, we explore why pastoral care is still in use in schools and how they help students across the board.

It provides an avenue where children can find support at school
Going to school, for most kids, feels like going to study for several hours and come home. With the access of pastoral care, there is a place for children to talk to someone about anything they’re struggling with at school, how to remain focused and tips to overcome stress and worries with their studies. It’s a place where children should feel comfortable and honest in a safe space.
It’s a good marker of a child’s progression
Having a good set of life skills means your child can adequately progress. Teachers tend to have a connection between the students they look after and their family – it’s a great way of having your child remain focused in school. Teachers are also able to keep tabs on students to see if their behaviour has changed or if there are any areas to work on either in school or at home.
It helps children feel secure
A safe, happy and healthy school means a happy child. Schools aim to promote care and guidance throughout a child’s life and should always be the focus for teachers and staff. To make children feel welcome, pastoral care aims to build a foundation for children, and if they feel secure and happy in school then they’re more likely to attend school, do well in their studies and come to teachers for support.
