Top 3 Reasons To Upcycle Your Old Stuff
This is a collaborative post. Thank you for supporting the posts which make this blog possible.
When you have a collection of old items, your instinct is to throw them away in some capacity. This usually means you literally check them away, or you do the more eco-friendly thing and recycle them. However, there’s an even better approach to this – you can upcycle your old stuff!
Upcycling is such a fantastic way to take old items and give them new purposes. There are literally loads of examples of how to do this, many of which you can find online. It can involve a lot of DIY crafting, which is something we love here on the blog. But, today’s post isn’t about giving you ideas, it’s about explaining why you should give upcycling a go.
It’s more environmentally friendly than recycling
Make no mistake about it, recycling is much better than chucking things away. Unfortunately, there are plenty of issues with the whole recycling system. For one, you have no way of knowing how your items will be recycled, or even if they can be. Many people assume something can be recycled, but for whatever reason, it never makes the cut. When you upcycle, you’re literally taking something old and transforming it into something new. There’s hardly any waste, you don’t have to worry about recycling contamination, and it’s great for the environment.
Free up space in your home
Upcycling is also a brilliant way of getting rid of clutter and freeing up space. You can take a selection of old things, then bring them together to make something practical that doesn’t take up space. For example, upcycle old magazines or newspapers, turning them into flower pots or containers. Even if you have old things in a self storage facility, upcycling them will free up space for you to put things that can’t be upcycled. Either way, it helps you save space where you need it the most.
Helps you save a lot of money
Perhaps the biggest advantage of upcycling – from a personal perspective – is that it can help you save lots of cash. The whole idea of upcycling is that you create new things from old items that are lying around. Therefore, you don’t have to go out and start buying new things. You’ll be pretty amazed at how much stuff in your house can be upcycled, rendering a new purchase completely pointless. Clearly, you can’t avoid buying new things at some points. If you need new appliances, you’ll have to buy them. But, upcycling saves loads of money on clothes, furniture, and much more. A good rule to live by is that you should see if you can upcycle something to create what you need before you go out and buy the product.
You can probably think of a handful of other reasons to start upcycling, but these are the top ones. If you’re wondering if it’s worth starting your upcycling journey, hopefully these points have convinced you. Just imagine how much less waste we could produce if everyone stopped throwing things away and tried to upcycle as much as possible.
