Conserving Water at Home with the Whole Family
This is a collaborative post. Thank you for supporting the posts which make this blog possible.
Being more eco-friendly at home is something that you could do on your own, but it’s much easier to manage if you can get the whole family involved. Once your children are old enough to understand and to manage their own actions, they can join in with making things greener around the house. There are various things that you can do if you want to make your home more eco-friendly, including saving water. When you save water, you both make your home green and save money on your water bills. Here are some of the ways that you and the whole family can join in.

Make House Rules
House rules for how to use water can help everyone to use less water. It’s a good idea to give everyone guidance on how to save water, especially for younger children who might only just be beginning to do things on their own. Your list of rules might include things like turning off the tap when brushing teeth or a time limit on showering. Of course, once you set the rules, you also have to make sure everyone is following them. Give plenty of encouragement and talk about why it’s important to save water and consider rewards for good behaviour too.
Collect Rainwater
Collecting rainwater is a good way to save water in your home, and it can even be fun. You can easily collect small amounts of rainwater with a water butt and use it to water your garden when there isn’t as much rain. There are also larger water collection tanks available, which you can see on sites like this link. In the UK, there are some regulations that you need to follow when collecting rainwater. These are especially important if you’re using a rainwater harvesting system that you intend to connect to your home. It has to be kept separate from the mains supply.
Install Water-saving Devices
An easy way to use less water at home is to install water-saving devices. It will allow the whole family to save water without having to really think about it. You can put a device in your toilet tank to reduce the volume of the flush (or there might be a way to adjust it on the valve). Your shower can also have a shower head that reduces the flow, as can your taps. You could immediately start saving water without much effort.
Use the Washing Machine and Dishwasher Correctly
Have the kids reached the age when you can teach them to do laundry and load the dishwasher? Making sure they do it in the most eco-friendly way will help you to save water. Instruct them to fill the dishwasher before turning it on to avoid wasting water on a half-empty load. Put on full loads of laundry too so that you don’t have to do too many. This will also help to save energy in your home.
Everyone can get involved in saving water in your home. Once your children are old enough to understand, they can help out too.
