How to Make Your Rented Accommodation Feel Like Home
This is a collaborative post. Thank you for supporting the posts which make this blog possible.
Moving house can be stressful, especially if you are leaving a beloved home that you’ve lived in for a long time. If you’re moving into rented accommodation, it can also be difficult initially to see it as your own home but here are some simple improvements you can make that will have you feeling at home in your new property in no time.

Choose Furniture Carefully
Choosing furniture that can be adapted to your new home is crucial. If your new rooms are a different shape or size than your old place, you might need to switch some of your pieces for space-saving alternatives or get creative with furniture placement and layout.
If you’re moving into a bigger property, the extra space might make it feel a bit empty and cold, to begin with, but you’ll soon find uses for any extra rooms or areas you didn’t have before. For example, if your new place has a bedroom that you won’t be using you can still make good use of the space by installing a fitted wardrobe for a box bedroom. That way you can create a separate dressing room, saving you space in the master bedroom.
Add Some Greenery
Plants are a perfect way to make a house come alive and feel more like home while also having the fantastic benefits of cleaning the air and removing toxins. Plants are great for reducing stress so will help you relax after the stress of the move. Adding plants to a desk or home office can also aid concentration, making it easier to get through those long work meetings and meet deadlines. You can also use plants as a way to express your personality in your new property, not only in the choice of the plants themselves but also in the style, size and shape of the pots or hangers that you choose.
Decorate the Walls
Using photographs, prints and wall art to decorate the bare walls in your new place means you’ll soon have it feeling like home. Bare, neutral walls may be the choice of landlords everywhere but that doesn’t mean it’s yours! Decorated walls can help create a cosier atmosphere and remind you of all the places, people and things you love. If you’re worried about leaving marks or holes in the walls in your rented property, fear not – there are many ways to hang pictures and wall art without damaging walls.
Spruce up the Floor
If the flooring in your rented home is poor quality or simply not to your taste, then sprucing it up with some rugs is a great way to make the home feel more like your own. Plus, this will protect the carpet or flooring beneath so you won’t need to worry about scrubbing out stains at the end of your tenancy. Choosing rugs to match other soft furnishings such as cushions and curtains can help you create a colour scheme in the room without needing to decorate the walls.
Keep Things the Same
Moving can sometimes make us nostalgic for the past and the things we’re leaving behind. If this is the case, use your existing furniture and decor to create a sense of continuity in your new home. You may not be able to replicate the layout exactly but by placing furniture in similar positions in the room and sticking to the same colour schemes, you can transfer certain aspects of your old home to your new, rented property to help it feel more like your own.
