How We’re Planning to Celebrate VE Day

Tomorrow marks the 75th anniversary of VE day. Although both my children are only KS1 at primary school, I was surprised not to see anything in their home schooling provided by their teachers this week. I think it’s incredibly important for our children to understand our history and so, off to Twinkl I went to find some activities.

If you haven’t signed up already, Twinkl are offering a massive amount of resources to parents and carers for free while on lockdown so it’s definitely worth signing up. This post is not an ad, I’m just a mama who has been hammering their site over the last 6 weeks!

HISTORY

First up we want them to understand why we are celebrating. I love this presentation in Twinkl which is aimed specifically at KS1 children.

There is an entire resource pack you can download, but with my two only in Nursery and Reception, there isn’t much they can do but if you have older ones, then it’s worth taking a closer look.

ACTIVITIES

There are so many things that you can do to mark the occasion. Here are a handful of the things that we have planned today:

BAKING

It wouldn’t be a VE Day celebration without cake, and we plan to do two lots of baking today and tomorrow.

First up, we will be making some scones. I’ve never made them before if I’m honest, so the results could be interesting. However, we plan to enjoy an afternoon tea tomorrow to mark the occasion so scones are a must!

Finally, a VE Day celebration would not be complete without a traditional Victoria Sponge cake. The recipe I use is the standard 6, 6, 6, 3 that my mum taught me as a child (6oz flour, 6oz sugar, 6oz butter and 3 eggs).

My mouth is watering already!

THE DAY

You have probably seen a huge amount of these popping up across social media, but I think it sounds like a wonderful plan to us. We hope to join in with as much of this as a 3 year old and 5 year old will allow!
