Today is officially the first day of spring, though you wouldn’t believe it considering the rollercoaster weather we’ve had recently. Here in our little corner of North Wales, it was 12 degrees on Friday last week, quickly followed by -2 on Saturday. A difference of 14 degrees in 24 hours! However, despite the volatile weather, we’ve been doing our best to get ready for spring with a little help from Baker Ross.

FOR THE PLANTS

The Bear and I have been talking a lot recently about flowers, and things growing in the garden. We have a Willow + Wild subscription to their boxes which is a great little monthly box all about nature inspired fun and learning. There are always seeds included to plant and is a great way to start getting her more interested in growing things. Add that to the fact that she is obsessed with all things little and teeny tiny – I’ve no idea where that’s come from – I thought some little flowerpots would be perfect for getting ready to move some of our seedlings over into when they’re ready.

This craft really is as simple as it gets. All you need is the Baker Ross mini porcelain flowerpots, some porcelain paints, as well as some paintbrushes. You then just need a little person to add a lot of colour to the pots. This is the Bear’s favourite part as she loves to paint and decorate anything.

Thankfully for us, she was in the mood for more than just pink (which is very rare these days). That means we ended up with three pots that were a fabulous array of colour. Once she was happy with her creations, we just baked the pots in the oven for 35 minutes at 150C to set the paint.

After much discussion over the pots and who we think would like them. Two were planted with succulents ready for Grandma and Nonna for Mother’s Day, and the third – Darcie’s favourite one on the left – we have put aside ready to plant with something special from one of the many things we are growing together. If only it would stay warm enough for things to grow and plant of course!

FOR THE BIRDS

However, we didn’t want to leave out the birds. The kids Grandma and Grandad have been taking part in the birdwatch campaigns recently. As a result the Bear especially has a new-found interest in birds.  Therefore, we used our porcelain paints to also decorate these wonderful ceramic bird feeders. We decorated two: one for our garden and one to give to Grandad for his birthday.

This works in the exact same way as decorating the flower pots. Let little ones enjoy painting with porcelain paints and a paint brush until they are pleased with their creation. Once happy, bake in the oven for 35 minutes at 150C to set. Once cool, you string up the bird feeder using the string included in the pack. Fill with feed and hang in your garden.

Given the unpredictability of the weather at the moment, the birds seem to be making good use of it. We have already needed to refill ours and love seeing it in the garden.

  2. Ahh what lovely little craft ideas. I’ve got two little boys who planted out sunflowers last year and lover it. But planting their own seeds in their own creative pots we’ll definitely be trying this year
