Crochet Soap Saver – Free Pattern

I posted a picture of a crochet soap saver on my Instagram a few weeks ago and was overwhelmed by the response. We are trying our best at the moment to reduce our plastic consumption and one of the areas we most struggle in is the bathroom. We switched over to soap bars a while ago now but I struggled to use them in the shower. So, I made this simple soap saver to help.

Not only is it easy to make, but is works to really work the soap into a lather making it even easier to use. My first design was enclosed which – although it looked good – it wasn’t a great design as it wasn’t reusable. So, I added a little design update ready to share with you all.

Here’s how I did it.

THE PATTERN (UK TERMS)

The soap saver

DK wool & a 4mm hook

• Chain 27
• Foundation row: ch1 (acts as first dc), dc in second stitch from the hook and then dc in every following stitch (27 stitches)
• Repeat until you have 20 rows of 27 dc stitches
• Loop row: ch 3 (counts as first tr), tr into next stitch, *ch 1, miss 1 stitch, tr into the next stitch* repeat until final 3 stitches. ch1, miss 1 stitch and tr into the final 2 stitches. (27 stitches with 12 gaps)
• 1 dc in every stitch for 2 more rows. (27 stitches)

The tie

4mm hook

For the tie you just need to make a length approximately 40 cm long with a simple chain stitch.

And that’s it! You now have everything you need for your very own crochet soap saver.

All you need to do now is close the bottom and side of your soap saver with a simple running stitch. Thread your tie through the loops in your soap saver and you’re ready to add your favourite soap and head to the shower!

As you can see this is a really simple pattern that is perfect for beginners. Make for yourself or maybe whip up a few ready for Christmas stocking fillers. These would make great Christmas gifts for anyone looking to make simple changes in their lives to help the planet we all share.
