The Smyths Baby Catalogue for 2019 has just landed and I couldn’t wait to take a little look inside its pages. I have some very close friends who are due their first babies in the next few months, so I love looking through catalogues for inspiration.
Having had two children of my own, I always like to try and choose new baby gifts which I would have loved to have received myself.
So, join me as I take a little peek inside its pages at what I would chosen for myself if I knew then what I know now.
SLEEP AIDS
Neither of my children are sleepers. They never have been really, especially the Bear. Even from very early days she refused to sleep unless she was physically touching me. We didn’t buy any kinds of sleep aid pre-birth as to be honest, we never realised how bad it would ever be. Up in the night for feeds and cuddles we expected so the tiredness wasn’t a surprise, but the not sleeping AT ALL was a shock to the system.
So, a sleep aid I think would be a great newborn gift. If they need it then great, it will be on hand. If – by some miracle – they are one of the lucky ones, then the baby will enjoy the lights as they grow.
TAKING THINGS ON THE ROAD
One thing that never even crossed my mind pre-birth was staying anywhere but our own home. Before we knew it thought we were ready to take our little tribe on a road trip. We had a wedding to go to when the Bear was 6 weeks old and it really stumped us. Therefore, for anyone looking for a practical gift to give, then why not a travel cot. Ours had a fabulous bassinet which meant it was perfect for when the kids were tiny babies.
That’s not all though as the travel cot had so many great uses. As a travel cot of course but also a play pen, a downstairs napping station an outdoor sunshade. It’s a useful piece of kit for parents.
ALL THINGS WOODEN
Finally, if they are super organised and already have EVERYTHING they need for their little bundle of joy on the way, then I would recommend any kind of wooden toy. Not only is it a given that little people will eventually grow in to anything you get for them, but in the meantime wooden toys make beautiful decorations for nurseries and fabulous props for photographs!
There we have it, my top three suggestions as gift ideas for any expecting parents.
